Could Olfactory Displays Improve Data Visualization ?

چکیده

olfaction displays (devices that output scented air) augment data visualization, that is, communicate information relevant to many fields?1 Perhaps incorporating underutilized modalities such as haptics (touch), olfaction, and gustation (taste) as data visualization aids is the next logical step to optimizing human information processing. It seems reasonable that adding the sense of smell to a virtual environment (VE) would enhance the environment’s presence or “realness.” Attempts have been made to include olfactory displays in VEs (for example, John Cater’s Deep Immersion Virtual Environment Laboratory at the Southwest Research Institute2), but most have been unsuccessful. One reason is the lack of a standard to represent and playback smells. Olfactory effects could play a crucial role in certain training environments, such as those for fire fighters and medical personnel.3 Current VEs include advanced visual and audio outputs, but smell is either very limited or absent. Very few studies focus on this subject, with most discussing ambient (wholeroom and long-duration) rather than specific (localized and short-duration) odors, which are relevant to data visualization and VR. At Princeton University, George Miller suggested that each of our sensory modalities has processing limits of seven (plus or minus two) information bits.4 Visualization Corner’s coeditor, Bowen Loftin, has mentioned in a previous installment that using additional modalities might circumvent the human information-processing limit and let us process an additional seven (plus or minus two) information bits for each modality utilized.1 Conceptually, the increase in data-processing capabilities via multimodal data visualization displays, along with the enhanced visualization experience provided by the multimodal environment, might provide a deeper, more sensitive, understanding of data otherwise unattainable through conventional visual and auditory displays. Another factor is that human olfactory capabilities differ by gender, age, number of odors used, whether odors mix, and the time it takes to detect an odor before automatically becoming desensitized or, worse yet, sickened by it.3

Transplantation of Olfactory Mucosa Improve Functional Recovery and Axonal Regeneration Following Sciatic Nerve Repair in Rats

Background: Olfactory ensheathing glia (OEG) has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect after being transplanted in rats with spinal cord injury. This study was conducted to determine the possible beneficial results of olfactory mucosa transplantation (OMT) which is a source of OEG on functional recovery and axonal regeneration after transection of the sciatic nerve. Methods: In this study...

Exploring the efficiency of users' visual analytics strategies based on sequence analysis of eye movement recordings

Visual analytics is often based on the intuition that highly interactive and dynamic depictions of complex and multivariate databases amplify human capabilities for inference and decision-making, as they facilitate cognitive tasks such as pattern recognition, association, and analytical reasoning (Thomas and Cook 2005). But how do we know whether visual analytics really works? This article offe...

Comparative Multivariate Visualization Across Conceptually Different Graphic Displays

To extend the scope of multivariate data visualization, the notion of comparative visualization is introduced: it allows the comparison of visualization methods by interconnecting several different graphic displays. This linking of visualizations, together with the possibility to interactively manipulate data, enable an analyst to display the same data set with a number of conceptually differen...

Visualization of Calendar Data

Since many centuries, calendars are used to organize appointments, events and tasks. In this thesis interaction and visualization techniques for calendar data are presented, which do not only support the organization and analysis, but also facilitate and improve them. The basis of the solution is a 3D heightfield visualization, which displays the workloads of time slots over periods of time in ...

Chromogranin A in the olfactory system of the rat.

The olfactory bulb of the rat contains chromogranin A at a similar level as the adrenal gland or the hypophysis as revealed by immunoblots. Olfactory chromogranin A also displays the same size as chromogranin A of endocrine cells. In the hippocampus and other brain regions, we could not detect chromogranin A by immunoblotting. In contrast, chromogranin A messenger ribonucleic acid (using S1 nuc...
